When I reached retirement age, I changed the course of my life and entered the healthcare field—something I had always been truly interested in. After completing the massage therapy program at Phoenix College, I began working as a licensed massage therapist in Scottsdale, Arizona. However, I quickly found myself asking the same question each day: “What does this client need, and how should I treat them?” I often felt unsure of how to work with flow and confidence while achieving positive results.
Many clients come to a spa with a mix of therapeutic needs—seeking pain relief and stress reduction. They expect noticeable improvements. As a professional, I also want to provide results that meet those expectations. But at the time, I was starting to feel burned out from working inefficiently. Since I had chosen massage therapy as my lifelong path, I realized I needed to protect my body by working in a more relaxed and sustainable way—without fatigue. I knew I had to focus on using minimal effort with maximum efficiency, even though I didn’t yet know how to make that happen.
Unfortunately, in the massage community, there are still many therapists (and clients) who believe in outdated ideas that “chase pain,” focusing only on the area where pain is felt. The “divided muscle” approach and “no pain, no gain” mindset ignore the importance of whole-body thinking. Too often, people believe chronic musculoskeletal conditions can’t be treated manually, and they turn to drugs or surgery instead.
Then I discovered Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques. MAT has helped me help many clients—and also gave me relief from my own lower back pain. I feel so confident using these techniques that I now focus exclusively on MAT in my practice. Earning my MMT certification is just the beginning. I see this as a lifelong journey of study and practice in a field I deeply love.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported me on my Master Myoskeletal Therapist journey—Erik, Kim, Clinton, Tammy, and all the wonderful teaching assistants. The MAT workshops are so much fun, and I always feel inspired by the many talented therapists from all different backgrounds who attend. Thank you all very much!
