Master Myoskeletal Therapist Spotlight: Scott Distel, MMT | Lansing, Michigan
For Scott Distel, massage therapy first proved its value long before it became his profession.
As an athlete, Scott used massage and bodywork to help recover from the physical demands of his activities. That firsthand experience stayed with him and eventually helped inspire a midlife career change. In 2011, he began practicing massage therapy, turning something that had supported his own recovery into a way to help others.
His introduction to Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques® (MAT) began simply. While attending a conference, Scott signed up for the Technique Tuesday email. What started as an opportunity to learn new techniques soon became something much more significant to his practice.
Scott began applying what he was learning with his clients and paying attention to the results.
“I became hooked on the method after seeing what applying the techniques on my clients did for them,” he says.
That practical effectiveness became the driving force behind Scott’s continued MAT education and his eventual completion of the Master Myoskeletal Therapist® (MMT) certification.
One of the qualities Scott values most is MAT’s versatility. Rather than treating the techniques as something reserved for a particular type of client or session, he has found ways to incorporate the work throughout his massage therapy practice in Lansing, Michigan.
“I like that I can apply MAT in all of my sessions,” Scott says.
For him, the most meaningful measure of the training is what happens with his clients over time.
“MAT has changed the results in my clients. Every client has seen improvements over time.”
Scott’s path also shows that exploring MAT does not have to begin with a major commitment. His own journey started with an email signup and grew as he experienced the techniques in practice.
His advice to other massage therapists is equally straightforward: “Anyone interested in MAT should either sign up for the Technique Tuesday email or just sign up for a class.”
