Master Myoskeletal Therapist Spotlight: Timothy Dempsey, MMT | Spartanburg, South Carolina
For Timothy Dempsey, moving into massage therapy was more than a career change. It was a new way to draw on years of experience helping people through injury and physical challenges.
Facing medical retirement as a public safety officer, Timothy became a certified massage therapist in 2021. His years as a paramedic, along with injuries he had witnessed and experienced himself, naturally pulled him toward therapeutic bodywork rather than a traditional spa focused practice.
After becoming certified in medical massage in 2023, Timothy discovered Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques® (MAT) through social media. Technique Tuesday videos and educational blogs immediately caught his attention because of their depth and emphasis on techniques designed to reduce discomfort for clients while requiring less physical exertion from therapists.
He began testing several techniques with regular clients experiencing chronic complaints.
“The results were nothing short of amazing!” Timothy says. “The clients started truly getting better and the referrals increased the demand exponentially.”
What ultimately distinguished MAT for Timothy was its emphasis on assessment.
Rather than relying on the same routine for every client, he learned to look more closely for potential contributors to dysfunction and then select techniques accordingly.
“I love that there is a large focus on assessing the client and not just using a shotgun approach to massage or using a pre-programmed routine,” he says.
After earning his Master Myoskeletal Therapist® (MMT) certification and opening his own massage therapy practice in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Timothy began incorporating MAT into nearly every session.
The response has helped his practice grow. Timothy reports receiving referrals from physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, and acupuncturists, along with word of mouth recommendations from clients. Some clients now travel an hour or more for appointments.
For Timothy, one of MAT’s greatest advantages is straightforward: “The best part about MAT is the results are longer lasting!”
He encourages massage therapists interested in a more therapeutic approach to injuries or pain to experience the education themselves.
“Take a course or attend a workshop to discover the keys to your success.”
Congratulations to Timothy Dempsey on earning his MMT certification and joining the Master Myoskeletal Therapist community. His transition from public safety and paramedicine to therapeutic massage reflects a continuing commitment to helping people move and feel better.
