When I reached retirement age, I changed my life’s course and entered the healthcare…a field that truly interested me. After completing a massage therapy program at Phoenix College, I began work as a licensed massage therapist in Scottsdale, Arizona. However, I soon found that each day I was faced with the same question: “What do I need to do for this client, and how should I do it?” I felt confused about how to work smoothly and achieve a good effect.
Typically, clients come to a spa with various therapeutic demands such as freedom from pain and relaxation from stress and they expect a comfortable outcome. As a professional who is paid money for my work, I want to get the result that the client is hoping for. Sadly, at the same time, I was beginning to feel burnout due to inefficient work habits. Since I my goal was to pursue massage therapy for the rest of my life, I knew that it was essential that I learn to protect myself by working in a more relaxed way, without fatigue. Although I knew that to accomplish this goal of minimum effort and maximum efficiency, I was not sure how to make it happen.
Then I discovered Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques. Unfortunately, in the massage community, there are still therapists (and clients) who believe in procedures that “Chase Pain,” focusing only on a limited area of the body where the pain is felt. The “Divided Muscle” and the “No-Pain-No-Gain” methods ignore the importance of “whole-body” thinking. Additionally, too many still believe that there is no way to manually relieve chronic musculoskeletal conditions, so they opt for unnatural treatments such as drugs or surgery. MAT has helped me serve my many clients while exploring solutions to my own problems, such as lower back pain. Therefore, I will follow the MAT method 100%, and share the fruits of MAT with all my clients and family… as well as myself. The MMT certificate is just the beginning of my exploration of this vast new frontier that I intend to study and practice throughout my life.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you all who have supported me in this ‘Master Myoskeletal Therapist’ journey including Erik, Kim, Clinton, Tammy, and all the teaching assistants. The MAT workshops are so much fun, and I am always inspired and encouraged to see so many attendees from various fields outside of massage attending these events. Thank you all very much!
