Master Myoskeletal Therapist Spotlight: Sakura Shibata Pickford, MMT | Huntington Beach, California
Sakura Shibata Pickford’s connection to massage began before she could have imagined it becoming a career.
As a toddler, she loved seeing her grandparents smile as she crawled on their backs while singing a Japanese children’s song about a child giving her mother a massage. Years later, massage would take on a much deeper meaning.
At 17, Sakura suffered a back injury that left her with persistent pain. She received numerous therapeutic sessions with varying results, but one question remained unanswered: Why was she hurting?
Her search for that answer eventually led her to study massage therapy and help others facing similar challenges.
In 2012, during her second year as a massage therapist, Sakura attended her first Erik Dalton workshop after hearing he was the “superstar of bodywork.” She was fascinated by the connections between osteopathy, pain science, movement analysis, and different body systems.
That experience led her to the Dynamic Body home study program and eventually deeper study of Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques® (MAT).
What Sakura found was more than a collection of techniques. MAT gave her a systematic framework for investigating possible contributors to a client’s condition, testing ideas, and adapting treatment based on feedback.
That approach now shapes her massage therapy practice in Huntington Beach, California.
Sakura believes clients experiencing persistent pain can feel helpless when they do not understand what is happening. Rather than making treatment a one sided process, she explains her observations and reasoning while encouraging clients to share what they are experiencing.
“I believe our sessions should be collaborative, effective, educational, empowering, and enjoyable,” Sakura says.
As clients better understand their bodies and experience meaningful changes, she has seen them regain confidence and become more active participants in their recovery.
For Sakura, earning her Master Myoskeletal Therapist® (MMT) certification strengthened both her clinical decision making and client communication.
