My journey into bodywork began back in 1987 when I was 19, dancing on cruise ships. During that time, I met a massage therapist from Ireland who worked on board. She showed me different techniques, and as a dancer, I thought, “This is a great way to put Scarecrow back together!”
Fast forward to 1994, when I moved to Los Angeles, just in time for the Northridge earthquake a week later. It literally shook me awake. As an aspiring performer, suddenly the idea of handing out headshots and saying, “Look at me!” felt superficial. I wanted to do something more meaningful, something that gave back. That’s when I discovered IPSB in Santa Monica, where they taught how to use the body mechanics of Tai Chi to give a Swedish massage. I was hooked from day one and completely immersed myself in the healing arts.
A few years later, while performing in the Broadway company of Beauty and the Beast (2001–02), I decided to continue my massage education and earn my license. I graduated from the world-renowned Swedish Institute in 2002 and have been a practicing Licensed Massage Therapist ever since. I’m now licensed in New York, Ohio, Michigan, and my new home state of North Carolina.
After graduating, I began exploring a variety of workshops and courses to see where I wanted my career to go. At one point, I even purchased an Erik Dalton home study course, but for some reason, I placed it on a shelf and didn’t open it for twenty years.
In 2022, I happened to notice that same course on my bookshelf and thought, “Why did I never open that?” Around the same time, my wife and I received a small settlement from a lawsuit with a company we had been let go from. Rather than simply paying bills, I wanted to invest in something meaningful, something I could look back on and say, “If that hadn’t happened, then this wouldn’t have happened.”
So, I went all in with Erik Dalton’s complete library of Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques (MAT) courses and set my sights on earning the Master Myoskeletal Therapist (MMT) certification. It’s now the foundation of my work, and I’m so glad I dove in 100%. It has truly transformed my massage practice.
What I love most about Dalton’s work is that it takes the guesswork out of massage. Too often, therapists end up chasing pain and hoping to hit the right spot. With Dalton’s approach, I enter each session with specific assessments and practical protocols that address the root cause, and you simply can’t argue with the results. MAT has given me clear tools to work with and an entirely new way of viewing the body as an integrated whole, rather than just “rubbing where it hurts.”
If you want a well-rounded education in massage therapy, one that gives you clear, informed, and effective tools to help your clients, dive in. You won’t find another program that offers the same depth of knowledge and generosity that Erik Dalton has shared through his decades of dedication to the massage community.
