Hello, my name is Jonathan Dewar. I am third generation in the bodywork field.
Growing up my father and grandfather’s clinic was either in my grandfather’s walk out basement or in a little building next to my parents house. For as long as I can remember I wanted to do something to help others with their health.
When I was probably 12 years old I watched a person shuffling from their vehicle into the little clinic beside our house, they were all bent over and clearly in pain, later I just happened to see that particular individual leave, they were standing much straighter and walking much more normally and seemed to be in much less pain. From that observation I concluded that I wanted to help people like that.
At 18 the education system and educational routes seemed to be so confusing. I was at the stage to decide which education path I would take to fulfill this passion. I wanted to be a Chiropractor like my grandfather and great-grandfather but I had so many people, including my grandfather, advising me to take an alternative route. What was that route? Massage school then further education classes to specialize.
During massage school was the first time in my life I actually had a massage,(taking my clothes off laying on a table under sheets, in the dark, with spa music playing while someone massaged my muscles with lotion for an hour), it was very different than what I was used to but enjoyable!
Massage school didn’t take long, I graduated with a 4.0 and passed the MBLEX exam with ease. Directly after finishing massage school, I started observing in my father’s clinic full time learning how to do fully clothed Therapeutic Bodywork within 30 min sessions like he did and started to go to educational workshops.
I met Erik Dalton at the Canadian Massage Conference in Burlington Ontario in September of 2018 and felt very connected to the way he treated and interacted with his clients, the experience felt like “Home”. I had never known about Osteopathic manual practitioners but Osteopathy felt like home to me too, I have deep emotion rising up within me as I write this. Massage Therapy is special, however massage for me never had the emotion “feels like home”.
When I returned to the clinic after the CMC I started using all the things I had learned, there were noticeable results in improving the function and pain in my client cases. I continued to be mentored by my Dad and Grandad while also taking other education classes. March 2021 I decided to jump head first and purchase the home study program from the Freedom From Pain institute. My life, as it seems most people’s lives are, was very full. I made time to study consistently, then here and there, then took a break, all the while incorporating the techniques and philosophy I was learning directly into my practice.
I graduated with my MMT July 2023 at the OKC conference with Erik Dalton full of excitement for the future.
I really appreciate the amount of effort that was put into the MAT curriculum. There is an incredible amount of high quality information within the text books that will have you coming back for more even after you complete your MMT. I also appreciate how there is an integrative approach in merging different knowledge and philosophy from related manual therapy fields.
