Achieving this certification, one of the highest standards for a massage professional, is no small feat. It takes a burning desire to get results for your clients and a great deal of commitment. In 2016, after more than 17 years of severe lower back pain and countless discussions with my surgeon, I finally agreed to undergo back surgery. The surgery was successful, but my recovery was extremely difficult. I worked with several physical therapists and pain management doctors, but the pain was unbearable. I couldn’t return to work, and my 20-year career as a big-box retail manager came to an end.
Running out of options, I decided to try massage therapy to help manage the pain—and that decision changed my life forever. My massage therapist successfully reduced my pain to a manageable level, allowing me to function again in daily life. I was so moved by what massage had done for me that I decided to make it my life’s work. I not only wanted to help myself, but also bring the same relief to others. I enrolled at The Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy and graduated in 2017—and I’ve never looked back. I now have a successful career as a licensed massage therapist and business owner, dedicated to sharing the benefits of massage with others.
A few days after graduating, I was shopping for office items in a resale shop when I found a small stack of books labeled “medical.” One, in particular, caught my attention—Advanced Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques (2005). What really stood out was the author, Erik Dalton, Ph.D., described as the “founder of the Freedom From Pain Institute.” I paused and thought, “Freedom from pain, my new friend… and Myoskeletal, my new career—I need this book.” As I flipped through it, I discovered fascinating insights into back pain and Dalton’s techniques for resolving it. That $10 used book became the “Bible” of my practice. I’ve read it, re-read it, studied it, and supplemented it with Erik’s online videos.
In 2020, I attended my first hands-on workshop with my friend and fellow LMT, Melissa Genovese. Our instructor, Nate Fay, was incredible. His passion, precision, and commitment to helping us truly understand each technique left us feeling confident and capable. We saw and felt real results in real time. After that workshop, I knew I had to dive deeper. I began the online portion of the Master Myoskeletal Therapist (MMT) program, applying each new technique with my clients week by week, sharpening my skills with every session.
In 2023, I attended the Oklahoma City workshop and had the chance to receive bodywork directly from Erik Dalton himself. It felt like everything had come full circle—from starting out as a massage patient in pain, to becoming a therapist helping others achieve relief, to learning from the person who inspired my journey in the first place. My freedom from pain gave me the chance to build a new career, discover a purpose, and continue learning and growing through Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques.
These techniques have been essential in building a thriving practice. My clients immediately feel the difference—from reduced pain to improved mobility—and they often refer others to me. MAT has also allowed me to work efficiently and protect my own body, supporting a long and sustainable career. I use MAT with every client, and the results speak for themselves. Referrals from physical therapists, occupational therapists, and chiropractors continue to grow, and my colleagues in those fields respect and value the work I do. I’m proud to offer care that bridges disciplines and transforms lives.
