Three key events in my life led me to become a massage therapist. The first was an amazing massage I received while on a scuba trip in Fiji. It was my first massage, and it left a lasting impression. It was so incredibly relaxing!

The second event was working with my son, who has Sensory Processing Disorder. I learned from his occupational therapist how to use joint compression therapy to help calm his nervous system. It was amazing to see how this simple proprioceptive input could have such a big impact.

The final turning point came when I herniated my L5-S1 disc, which caused excruciating pain. I had back surgery, but unfortunately, it didn’t help—and actually made things worse. I tried different treatments, but nothing really provided relief. That’s when I realized I needed to figure out a way to help myself.

At the time, I already had a background in science with a B.S. in Microbiology, but I knew I needed to learn more about the human body. So, I hit the books again. Along my journey to find self-care solutions, I discovered so many things that helped me—and I realized I could help others, too. That’s when I decided to enroll in massage school.

While in massage school, one of my instructors told me that if I ever had the chance to study under Erik Dalton, PhD, I should jump on it. After graduating, I took an Erik Dalton MAT workshop in Oklahoma—and I absolutely loved it! From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly MMT who helped students bring in their tables. The whole Dalton team was so welcoming and supportive. During the workshop, I was impressed by the skill and expertise of the MMTs, and I decided I wanted to learn more, complete the program, and become an MMT myself.

I’m committed to continuing my education and sharpening my skills under the guidance of my mentors. My personal experience with chronic pain has given me a unique understanding and sensitivity when working with clients who are in pain. I’ve also learned that there were a lot of things I could have done to prevent my pain in the first place. As they say, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Sometimes I wonder if my injury could have been prevented if I’d seen an MMT to help me identify and address my strain patterns before they turned into pain patterns.
