I have been a massage therapist for 23 years, and my background in massage began long before I became massage therapist. I started my journey in the medical field, working in a long-term care facility and later in a brain and spine rehabilitation center. In those settings, I learned a great deal about circulation, skin care, and muscle imbalances. I also saw how even gentle lotion applications for wheelchair-bound patients helped them relax and sleep much better.
I eventually worked for a neurosurgeon, where I learned a lot about spinal surgeries and recovery. From there, I finally found a massage school and took the plunge, diving into medical massage, post-operative massage, neuromuscular work, and sports massage. My passion is helping clients who can’t quite get over the hump with pain and imbalances so they can feel better every day. I also believe strongly in educating clients, so they can take part in healing their bodies. Knowledge is power for both the therapist and the client.
I first discovered MAT while searching for advanced classes. I had already heard of Erik Dalton through local trainings and many advanced technique books I owned. After searching for his work, I found the Freedom From Pain Institute, signed up for the free newsletter, and watched every technique clip he shared. I was excited to use them and noticed the difference even small techniques made in my clients’ lives, which fueled my desire to learn more. Although it took many years before I pursued my MMT, I am incredibly grateful that I did. I was also fortunate to meet Erik at an OKC conference.
I love how MAT techniques combine advanced knowledge of conditions with simplicity in application. The education provides a deeper understanding of structure and systems and how they all contribute to pain and recovery. Learning to apply techniques correctly without causing more discomfort for the client is priceless. MAT has helped me better assess pain, imbalances, and injuries, advance my clients’ healing, and clearly explain what they can do every day to help themselves feel better. My clients trust my work more, experience longer periods without pain, and use the information I share to maintain lasting comfort.
MAT also played a huge role in my return to work after neck surgery in 2023, when I had a total disc replacement at C6–7. Using MAT techniques in my post operation rehab reduced strain on my neck and helped rebuild strength in my left arm which was completely numb and immobilized prior to surgery. Without having the knowledge of MAT, this surgery could have ended my career. MAT gave me longevity as a therapist and allowed me to return to work just five weeks after surgery while continuing to heal. It truly saved my career.
