I’ve been a Licensed Massage Therapist since 2009, and my early years in the field were spent in a high-volume corporate setting, delivering back-to-back sessions focused primarily on what was labeled as “deep tissue” work. While clients often left feeling better, I began to recognize a pattern; I wasn’t creating lasting change. I was helping people feel just comfortable enough to return, but not truly resolving the underlying issues driving their pain.
That realization led me to step away and build my own practice. In that transition, I shifted toward a more assessment-driven, orthopedic approach, focusing less on pressure and more on precision, function, and long-term outcomes. It fundamentally changed how I view massage therapy. For me, it’s no longer about temporary relief, but about understanding dysfunction at its source and helping clients move and feel better in a meaningful, lasting way.
My introduction to Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques came after attending the World Massage Festival, where I was immersed in a completely different learning environment, one centered on growth, curiosity, and clinical skill. Erik Dalton’s approach, in particular, had a significant impact on how I think about alignment and how to integrate techniques into efficient, results-driven treatment plans.
What stands out to me most about MAT is its ability to bridge precise, clinical work with a comfortable client experience. The techniques are effective without needing to feel aggressive. I’m able to work with clear intention and specificity, while still keeping sessions fluid and approachable for the client.
For therapists considering MAT, my advice is simple: don’t sit on the fence. If your goal is to become more effective, this is a path worth pursuing. MAT isn’t about collecting techniques; it’s about learning how to assess, think critically, and apply your work with purpose. If you commit to the process, it will absolutely elevate the level of care you provide.
